Hannah:‘After S Club…

…people thought I’d fail – I’ve proved them wrong’

Hannah Sunday Mirror Celebrity Magazine

Primeval star and ex S Clubber, Hannah Spearritt, 26, on leaving pop stardom behind, finding happiness on TV – and owing it all to Billie Piper…

Hannah Spearritt is a girl done good. The former S Club 7 singer could so easily have gone the same way as many ex-pop band members before her – languishing in obscurity only to reappear for an occasional dip in the murky waters of reality TV. As it is, she’s become a mistress of reinvention, forging a highly respectable new career as an actress in the hit ITV1 drama, Primeval, which returns for a second series next Saturday night. When the tweeny pop sensations disbanded in April 2003, Rachel Stevens was the one predicted to succeed (the, erm, Gary Barlow of the outfit, if you like), and for a while that seemed to be the case. But no longer. Hannah has overtaken her ex-band mate on screen, proving herself to be the unpredictable Robbie Williams-style star of the group.

‘I don’t know about that. But what is quite nice is I don’t think anyone expected me to do anything – I was the underdog, I suppose,’ she says. ‘I always wanted to do something in the acting world, but I can see why no one predicted that I’d make a go of it.’

Hannah’s breakthrough as an actress has invited parallels with Billie Piper, who herself made a stunning transformation from teen popstrel to credible actor. ‘She’s done great, full respect to her. She’s going to be around for a long time, and I hope I can do the same. We’re very different types of actresses, but she’s shown it can be done and without that, I might not have found my route through.’ (more…)

Remote Control – Hannah Spearritt

Interview from Now magazine – March 2007

Favourite TV programme?
I really liked Fortune: Million pond giveaway, which Richard Madely hosted. I thought the stories were really interesting. I love Family Guy, too – it’s hilarious.

What makes you turn over?
Cricket’s really boring and I can’t stand watching golf on TV, but my Dad loves it.

Sexiest man on TV?
Wentworth Miller from Prison Break – he’s hot!

What show would you bring back?
I’d be quite keen to bring back the A–Team, but I like to think Primeval has a bit of the A-team in it anyway. (more…)

Me & My Dog with Jon Lee

Jon Lee with Molly

Jon Lee with Molly

Jon Lee found fame as one seventh of pop sensations S Club 7. With hit records, a hit TV series as well as legions of adoring fans, Jon made an indelible mark on popular culture at a very young age.

After a small hiatus, he is now back in the limelight appearing in Love Shack the Musical with former Hear’Say star Noel Sullivan and Faye Tozer from Steps.

Hi Jon, tell us about your dog…

My dog is called Molly, she’s an 11 years old Samoyed x Border Collie, she has all the markings of a Border Collie but the fluffiness of a Samoyed.

When I was younger and still at school so I must have been 11 or 12 years old I used to volunteer for Animals In Distress after school and it was only about 6 months after one of our dogs Sasha had died, anyway, this one day someone just turned up and left a box of puppies on the doorstep so I called my mum to come down and see them, she asked me which one I wanted and we chose Molly, she was the runt of the litter. She’s recently been diagnosed with diabetes so she’s having two injections a day but it hasn’t affected her really, she’s as happy as Larry!

“I’m a Bingo Geek”

Jo O'MearaJo’s return to the pop club

So, just where have you been for the last two years?

‘I just took just took some time off. I wanted to get away from the whole industry for a while and live a normal life. I spent a lot of time with my family, I went on holiday and ditched the boyfriend.’

You had a pretty productive time then.

‘Yeah. It was a very good time for me. And the last year I’ve spent getting the right team around me and working on the album.’

How does it feel now it’s just you and you haven’t got a group to hide in?

‘It is very weird but it’s cool because it’s a new challenge. I’m one of those people who likes a challenge. Sometimes it’s a bit lonely. It felt really peculiar the first time I sang my song on stage, but it’s cool now.’

Revealing Rachel

By Susan Riley

With a catchy comeback single and a fresh new attitude, Rachel Stevens is about to score big time. In a revealing interview, the sexy semite singer talks about her solo life both on stage and off.

Oh my God. Rachel Stevens is about to say the most un-celeb thing ever. “I don’t think I’m fat,” she says as we relax on a sunny roof terrace in east London. “But being photographed so much does make you aware of your figure. You can’t help but look in magazines sometimes and think, ‘Oh no, I look really big there!’ The thing is, you can’t scrutinise yourself too much – it’s just not important enough.” Well said, the girl in the customised England kit!

This honest and no-nonsense attitude is the first sign that, after six years in pop – five in S Club and one as a solo artist – Rachel is finally finding out what she’s all about.

Rach Tells All

Rachel Stevens pops in for a gossip about her love life

There’s been so much speculation about me and my paramours lately I decided to visit my favourite showbiz column 3am to set the record straight.

First off, let me tell you about David Schwimmer from Friends.

I bumped into him at Heathrow last month on my way back from a friend’s wedding in Marbella and I was talking to him about going to LA and possibly getting into acting. He said to give him a call when I’m in town. He seems like a really nice guy although we didn’t get to speak that much, but he is definitely my type – tall, dark and handsome. The fact that he’s rich is a bonus!

Will I give him a call when I get to LA? Maybe.

And perhaps when I’m there I’ll bump into Justin Timberlake. How sexy is he? He’s someone I’d love to work with, and with any luck I’d be able to get up close and personal with him on our video shoot. Who wouldn’t?

Smells Like Teen Spearritt

She was one-seventh of the biggest pop phenomenon to take Britain by storm since The Spice Girls. During nearly five years at the top of the music tree, Hannah Spearritt and her S Club 7 pals totted up a string of hits, two Brit Awards and raked in a rumoured £50m for their manager Simon Fuller.

With more than 3.5m viewers, their 1999 spin-off TV show Miami 7 was the most-watched children’s programme in the UK. It was also televised in another 104 countries. When the gang split in May last year, hordes of teen fans – used to bopping to the likes of Reach and Don’t Stop Movin’ – were in floods of tears.

Ten months on, baby-faced blonde Hannah, who turns 23 next Thursday, is carving out a solo acting career. Her first role since the band sees her playing a teen spy in the kids’ flick Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London.

Hannah, from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, talks about her love for acting, former band-mate Paul Cattermole, 26, and her new-found anonymity.

The new Cody Banks girl

Every spy movie series has to have a new girl in each entry. So, for Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London, Hilary Duff is out and the new Banks Girl is Hannah Spearritt. A former member of the British pop band S Club, Spearritt plays Emily, a girl in an international child orchestra that Cody infiltrates on his latest mission.

In person, Spearritt’s accent sounds more raw and thick than in the movie. She’s a hardcore Brit and sometimes doesn’t pronounce the Ts in words. She wore an Anaheim Angels baseball cap and a white tank top, looking almost like a baseball hooligan, but that’s the wrong sport. Nothing about her personality was violent though, as she opened up giving the world a chance to get to know the latest Banks Girl, and hopefully the future internationally successful actress.
