From S Club 7 to Secret Agent

Hannah Spearritt in Agent Cody Banks 2This gorgeous, big-eyed blonde was a hot member of the popular Brit pop group S Club 7 and in March, 2004, 22-year-old Hannah Spearritt makes a transition to film when she will play opposite Frankie Muniz in Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London. We wondered how Hannah feels about taking on feature films, her past as a popstar and her role in the teen spy flick. We grabbed her for a few quick questions…

What is the latest status of S Club now? Has the band totally broken up or are they reorganizing? Any Regrets?

We completely split in May, 2003. No regrets – yet! We were together for five years and all of us luckily wanted to move on at the same time and do our own individual thing. Except for Paul. He left last year.

The Face in the Crowd

Not the best dancer in S Club, Rachel Stevens has more than made up for this on Funky Dory. PAUL STOCK asks ‘what’s the dory’ from the former shoe shop salesgirl

That diminutive sex bundle, Rachel Stevens, even agrees with something of a dismissal of her role in S Club ‘the one there to top all those FHM polls’. But as the two singles already lifted off Funky Dory, the David Bowie-inspired title track and the oh so bitchy Sweet Dreams My LA Ex prove, she doesn’t need nobody else.

“In S Club I played a role in a band. Inevitably, with so many of us we were each given labels ‘this one’s the singer’, ‘this one does the dancing’… But now I can go off and be me. And I’m enjoying being me. My horizon’s wide open now.”

Everything is Hunky Dory

Stunning Rachel Stevens reckons she and boyfriend Jeremy Edwards are stronger than ever since their summer split. Despite rumours it was all a stunt to promote her debut single, Sweet Dreams My LA Ex, Rachel, 25, vehemently denies this and says it was a horrible time.

She said: “It should have been an amazingly happy time for me. I was releasing my debut single and everyone seemed to like it. But instead, my personal life was a mess. Saying it was a stunt upset me. All the stories in the press complicated it even more.”

It was in August that former S Club singer Rachel and Holby City star Jeremy reportedly split. They were engaged, but just as her debut single was about to be released the stories appeared. Critics howled that she was doing a Geri Halliwell, keeping herself in the news to punt her single – especially when the single went straight in at No.2 and the pair got back together again.

‘Our Film Is Mad!’

Jon LeeYesterday we spoke to Jo, and today we catch up with her bandmate Jon. The charming fella tells all about S Club Juniors, S Club’s new movie Seeing Double and the special appearance of a certain Mr Gareth Gates…

Is it good to be back?

‘Yeah! It’s lovely to be back in the wind and the rain! I love the autumn/winter time – It’s my favourite time of year. Honestly!’

Jo’s off ill, so how are you coping as a five-piece?

‘It’s really weird, ‘cos now we’re a normal-sized band! The thing that made S Club 7 different all these years was that there were seven of us, and at the moment we’re a ‘normal’ band. Eurgh! Don’t like that! But Jo will be back with us soon – she’s just taking time off with some discs in her back. She does do a few things with us, but nothing too strenuous!’

Go Clubbing!

Jo O'MearaDespite the departure of Paul, and the constant rumours of a split, S Club are still very much alive and kicking! We start with poor Jo, who’s been off duty, suffering from a bad back…

Hi, Jo! How are you feeling?

‘Not too great. I’ve got a condition that runs through my family – well, the women, anyway. There’s a disintegrated disc in my spine and it limits me from doing stuff that I want to do – especially being in a pop band! It doesn’t really help when you can’t dance!’

S Club Secrets Revealed

Tina BarrettTake That, Spice Girls, Boyzone, Five, Steps and, if rumour has it right, then imminently Westlife. It’s in the sciences, genetically proven that pop groups have a lifespan.

Three albums, the departure of a key member, a stunted attempt to carry on and it’s all over by the Greatest Hits. When Paul Cattermole – the star S Club attraction to the ladies and certain gentlemen – announced he was leaving to pursue a nu-metal direction at the start of the year – it looked like the familiar cycle was starting again (after we’d stopped laughing that is).

“We were quite kind of shocked that he was actually gonna leave,” says Tina Barrett, the raven-haired late-flowering talent of the sixsome. “But in the big picture it wasn’t too much of a shock because Paul wasn’t really into the music. He was into, y’know, rock music. It’s a cool way to start off but I think after four years he was ready to do his own thing.”

So there was never any danger of S Club taking on Paul’s nu-metal direction?

“He would have had a long wait! He would have had to hang on for that. I don’t think the world’s ready for S Club metal!”

  2. Tiny
  3. Cool
  4. Hot!
  5. Really rather exhausting actually

“Its been hot.”

Have you taken up any new hobbies?

“I’ve got my laptop with me all the time now and my keyboard and I’m always writing songs.”

What was your highlight of the year?

“It has to be all of it- winning an award for Don’t Stop Movin’ was heavy, the tour was good.”

S Club’s School Days

It’s that time of year again that we all dread. Yep, the school bell is about to ring on another new term and that means the summer holidays are definitely over. But don’t get too down. We’ve asked those rays of sunshine from S Club to brighten up the return to class. Check out how Rachel, Bradley and co got through what only old people say are ‘the best days of your life’.

What were you like at school?

Bradley: ‘I was bad at school. Nobody should take after me because I was just silly. I never used to concentrate in class. I was like the class clown. Me and my friends used to get in trouble by doing anything destructive and bad. We were a right bunch of rebels!’

Rachel: ‘I was quite cheeky, but I never got in trouble. I’d joke about with the teachers and was quite mischievous, too. I used to love school. It was just such a laugh. I really enjoyed lessons like art, drama and music, and just being with my m8s.’
